Renting procedure

How is the car hire procedure?

Which documents are necessary to hire a car?

  • The driver’s original and valid passport (As well necessary for additional drivers).
  • The driver´s original and valid driving license (As well necessary for additional drivers).
  • A valid credit card.

Insurance and payment

Can I lower the potential self risk by purchasing additional insurances?

  • Yes, CheapJeep offer an additional SCDW insurance, that lowers the self risk from ISK 450.000 (approx. EUR 3.000) to ISK 75.000 (approx. EUR 500). The SCDW cost ISK 1.500-2.000 (approx. EUR 10-15) per day depending on vehicle type. It is not possible to lower the self risk further as CheapJeep wishes to maintain a potentially high self risk to encourage our customers to drive safely and handle our vehicles with care and thus prevent accidents. How do you count the days of the car hire exactly?

  • The days are counted in sections of 24 hours from the time of pick up. Partial days must be paid in full for reasons of insurance.

How is the payment procedure?

  • We only accept payments by credit card (Visa, MasterCard)
  • Your credit card will be charged the full amount upon reservation - 85% hereof is refundable up to 48 hours before the rental period begins.

Vehicles and restrictions

Can I choose the model, colour, engine performance or type of fuel?

  • For technical reasons it's not possible to choose any further facilities, different from those mentioned in the group/category.
  • Though never hesitate ask us for your individual wishes, we will try our best to realize them - even if they do not appear in our fleet description.
  • When you are making your booking for the car please take good look at the car size, luggage and number of people the vehicle type will support - this is very important for your trip so that you can travel in comfort.

The specific vehicle I am looking for is not included in your fleet selection?

  • If you contact us a few weeks in advance there is a good chance that we can provide the vehicle you are requesting. Please send an email or call our booking office with our request.

Do I need a 4x4 car to drive in Iceland (see also next question)?

  • You do not need a 4x4 car when just traveling in the capital area and on the Ring Road (road number 1). Regardless to that we always recommend using a 4x4 since the are more stable and secure on the road specially during winter season.
  • HOWEVER, should you want to explore the wilderness and beauty of the Icelandic highlands a 4x4 is required. Please note that only Class X, A, B, C, D and L vehicles are allowed to be driven on roads marked F on official maps and KJÖLUR, road nr. 35. and KALDIDALUR nr. 550. Only Class X, A, B, C, D and L are allowed to cross water of any kind (still at own responsibility). All other vehicles are allowed to travel on light gravel roads, but are not suitable for driving into the highlands.

What happens if I do not respect the driving restrictions and I drive a vehicle class where it is forbidden?

  • Should the restrictions put forward in the terms and condition be ignored all insurances are null and void. The renter/driver will be held fully responsible and liable in case of accidents and will bear all consequences, including the cost of repair of the damaged vehicle(s). Even though there are no visible defects on the vehicle the renter/driver can be held liable for lubrication, greasing, drying, cleaning and engine overhaul of vehicles that has been driven into deep water. Pick-up and drop off

Where are is Cheap Jeep located in Keflavík?

  • Our main office in Reykjanesbær (Keflavík International Airport) is at Grænásvegur 10 which is only a 5 minute drive from the international aiport in the same direction and on the same road you would use when heading to the capital (Reykjavik). We do not have a desk within the airport. Pllease give us a call +354-666-5444 on arrival and we will pick you up within minutes (Our FREE shuttle schedule is every 30 minutes). During the busiest days of the year please expect some delay since there could be few that arrived just before you did.
  • In case you like to get to our office on your own the local taxi station in Keflavik is A-stodin tel: +354-420-1212 or +354-421-1515 and for sure there is always taxi´s outside of the airport.

Can the cars be delivered to any place in Reykjavik?

  • We have a pick up / drop off loaction in Reykjavik at the domestic airport which is in the center of the capital. That service does not have a fixed opening hour but serves scheduled booking appointments only (online/e-mail/phone reservations). For your information one of the local taxi telephone numbers in Reykjavik is +354 588-5522.

Where and how will I return the car?

  • Come to our Booking Office as agreed on with the necessary papers and keys. Our staff will inspect the vehicle for damages and once approved you will be asked to park the vehicle where you took it and return the keys. 

Accessories

Can trailer coupling, roof luggage carrier etc. be hired with the car?

  • We offer a range of accessories, incl. GPS navigation, children seats, baby seats, roof rails, roof boxes, cooling boxes, trailers, 220V/USB power supply, FM music transmitters etc. You can find information on our selection of accessories under the “Equipment&Services” link. Should you have special requests please notify our staff and they will try to assist in any way possible.
